Henry Louis Gates Jr. (September 18, 1950) is an American historian, filmmaker, professor, and literary critic. He entered this world at Keyser, W.Va. Gates attended Piedmont High School and graduated in 1968. He then attended Potomac State College at West Virginia University before moving to Yale University, where he earned a BA in history and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Yale in 1973. To pursue his Ph.D. in English literature at Clare College, Cambridge, Gates became the first African American to receive a fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
For whatever reason, Gates decided to leave Yale Law School after only a month. After applying for a position at Yale's Afro-American Studies department in October 1975, he was hired by Charles Davis. In 1984, Gates was offered tenure at Cornell University, and he wanted Yale to match the offer, but Yale declined. In 1985, Gates accepted a teaching position at Cornell, remaining until 1989.
Gates hosted an episode of the BBC series Great Railway Journeys in 1995. (produced in association with PBS). Gates and his then-wife Sharon Adams and their children Liza and Meggie traveled over 3,000 miles across Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania for the program.
