Pirates Of Penzance Information

Composed by Arthur Sullivan and with a libretto by W. S. Gilbert, "The Pirates of Penzance;" or "The Slave of Duty" is a two-act comedy opera. On December 31, 1879, the opera had its official premiere at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City, where it was met with enthusiastic responses from both audiences and critics. It opened on April 3, 1880, at the Opera Comique in London which lasted for 363 performances.

The protagonist, Frederic, has just turned 21, marking the end of his apprenticeship with a group of benevolent pirates. Soon after meeting Mabel, one of Major-General Stanley's children, he finds himself hopelessly in love with her. When Frederic discovers he was born on February 29, he realizes that he technically only celebrates his birthday once every four years due to the leap year. According to the terms of his indenture, he is obligated to continue serving as a pirate trainee until he reaches the age of 21 or for the next 63 years. Frederic's only solace, trapped by his sense of responsibility, is that Mabel will wait for him without fail.

The "Major-Song" General's was first performed in Gilbert and Sullivan's fifth musical, Pirates, which has since been parodied many times. For nearly a century, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Britain and numerous other opera companies and repertory groups worldwide staged the opera. One such updated version is the 1981 Broadway production directed by Joseph Papp, which ran for 787 performances, won the Tony Award for Best Revival and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and was the basis for numerous rip-offs and a 1983 film adaptation. Even today, Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance is one of the most regularly performed operas, alongside The Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore.
