Pacific Northwest Ballet Information
Pacific Northwest Dance (PNB) is a dance group based in Seattle, Washington. Among American television networks, it reportedly had the largest per capita attendance in 2004, with 11,000 members.
With a staggering 49 dancers and a remarkable 100 performances annually, the company is most recognized for its production of the Stowell/Maurice Sendak Nutcracker, which it staged from 1983 to 2014 and later adapted into a film.
In 1972, after the First Chamber Dance Company's two-month stay as part of the Seattle Opera, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, originally called the Pacific Northwest Dance Association, was established, marking the beginning of a rich and vibrant history.
This company separated from the Opera in 1977 and adopted its present name in 1978 under the direction of Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, formerly of the New York City Ballet.
Two 2006 festivals featured the company's dance performances in the New York City Center and one at Jacob's Pillow. The Seattle Center's McCaw Hall is the venue for PNB's performance. PNB made history by bringing in Twyla Tharp as its first artist-in-residence for a residency that lasted for an entire year in 2012.
