The French musical Notre Dame de Paris premiered on September 16, 1998, in Paris. It was inspired by Victor Hugo's novel Notre Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the United States). Riccardo Cocciante (Richard Cocciante) composed the music, and Luc Plamondon wrote the lyrics.
Since its inception, it has been translated into eight languages (English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Korean, Flemish, Polish, and Kazakh) and played professionally in Belgium, Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.
In 2000, an abbreviated English version debuted in Las Vegas, Nevada (United States), while a full-length English version ran in London for seventeen months. Single releases of several songs from the performance, including "Vivre," "Belle," and "Le temps des cathédrales," have been enormously successful in French-speaking nations. As of 2022, Daniel Lavoie and Bruno Pelletier, two of Canada's original stars, played Gringoire and Frollo.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Notre Dame de Paris had the best opening year of any musical. To date (2007), there have been at least seven separate score recordings. The first was a French concept album that featured Israeli singer Achinoam Nini (aka Noa) in the role of Esmeralda.
