Motown - The Musical Information
A jukebox musical called Motown: The Musical made its Broadway debut in April 2013. The history of Berry Gordy's founding and management of the Motown record label, as well as his personal and professional relationships with Motown artists like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson, are all covered in his autobiography To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown (1994). The production's words and melody are derived from various Motown albums. At the 67th Tony Awards, it garnered four nods.
After previews began on March 11, 2013, Motown: The Musical had its Broadway debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 14, 2013. Charles Randolph-Wright oversaw the direction of the play, which also featured Patricia Wilcox's choreography, David Korins' scenic design, ESosa's costumes, Natasha Katz's lighting, Peter Hylenski's sound design, and Daniel Brodie's projection design. Ethan Popp oversaw the music, made the arrangements, and orchestrated the music alongside Bryan Crook.
On January 18, 2015, the musical's first Broadway run ended after 738 regular performances and 37 previews. Clifton Oliver and Allison Semmes started a national tour in April 2014. On July 12, 2016, the production returned to Broadway for an 18-week run at the Nederlander Theatre. However, the run ended earlier than anticipated, on July 31, 2016.
