Merrily We Roll Along is an American musical that came out in 1981. Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics, and George Furth wrote the original book. This production is based on the 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart of the same name.
The musical covers the narrative of how the lives and friendships of three friends change for twenty years. The performance focuses primarily on Franklin Shepard, a gifted composer of musicals who, over those 20 years, abandoned his friends and songwriting profession to become a producer of Hollywood movies.
Like the play it's based on, Merrily We Roll Along takes place in reverse chronological order, starting in 1976 during the friends' darkest hour and concluding in 1957 during their happiest.
Rewritten considerably over the years, the show has seen multiple successful performances since its inception. This includes a 1994 off-Broadway revival and a 2000 London premiere named the year's best new musical by the Laurence Olivier Awards.
The musical had its first revival on Broadway in the fall of 2023. Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez starred under Maria Friedman's direction. The performance was moved from an off-Broadway production that was produced at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2022. There are plans to turn it into a movie starring Paul Mescal, Beanie Feldstein, and Ben Platt.
