Les Violons Du Roy Information
Les Violons du Roy is a French-Canadian orchestra founded in 1984 that originated from Quebec City, Quebec. Bernard Labadie is behind the creation of this ensemble, accompanied by his productions at the Université Laval (Dido and Aeneas and L'incoronazione di Poppea). The principal venue for the orchestra is the Palais Montcalm in Québec City. They also perform concerts in Montréal at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Place des Arts, and St. James United Church.
Les Violons du Roy's name is an adaptation of the 17th-century French royal court orchestra known as Les Vingt-quatre Violons du Roi. 15 musicians are working in this orchestra perform on modern instruments. The members use duplicates of period bows for string instruments, along with the sparing use of vibrato. The orchestra's two music directors are Bernard Labadie (1984–2014) and Jonathan Cohen (2017–present).
The first performance delivered by Les Violons du Roy in Europe took place in 1988, while in Washington, D.C., they performed in 1995. In August 1997, the orchestra first appeared in New York City. Some of the past conductors who worked for the orchestra include Jean-Marie Zeitouni, a past principal guest conductor, and Eric Paetkau, the former resident conductor. The orchestra's current associate conductor is Mathieu Lussier, while the principal artistic partner is Anthony Marwood.
Les Violons du Roy has commercially recorded for the Dorian, ATMA Classique, and Virgin Classics label. The orchestra won the Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year twice, in 2001 and 2003.
