Heywood Banks Information
Stuart Mitchell (April 1, 1950) is an American writer and performer of humorous songs and comedians. He is professionally known by his stage name, Heywood Banks. Mitchell performed standup comedy and music under his name in the 1970s and 1980s. After a trip to Los Angeles in 1987, during which he saw many other comedians doing similar things to him, his wife recommended he create a few characters. Finally, in 1987, he began acting as Heywood Banks, a character he had created.
The nationwide finals of the Johnnie Walker Comedy Search were broadcast on A&E's An Evening at the Improv on October 19, 1988, after he had won the competition the previous year. He went on to win the Miller Lite Comedy Search regional finals hosted in Clinton Township, Michigan, later that same year. Heywood is a regular guest on The Bob and Tom Show, a radio program that is broadcast nationwide. His most well-known song, "Toast," is performed using a set of forks and a toaster. Trauma to the Groin is another one of B&T's staple songs.
The Dr. Demento Show has also featured Heywood's music. In 1993, he had a starring role in a WJBK pilot named The Heywood Banks Show. His character was the Toast Basket shop manager at a mobile home community. He also portrayed Hyphen (Dash) Ampersand, a trailer park inhabitant. A rendition of his composition "Toast" was featured in the preview.
