Hawaii Opera Theatre Information
The only significant opera company on the islands is the Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT), founded in 1960. In a season, the group presents three or more operas. The opera season begins in October and lasts until early summer the following year. It primarily performs in Honolulu's Blaisdell Concert Hall.
The Blaisdell Concert Hall is where HOT performs most of its mainstage plays. Still, it has also presented productions at other unique locations such as the Chinatown Artist Lofts, the old Hawaii Theatre, and warehouses. Since 2004, HOT has introduced a summer production of a Gilbert and Sullivan comedic opera or a musical. In 2016, HOT will present a concert production of Verdi's Rigoletto with Hawaii-native baritone Quinn Kelsey. Kelsey's career as a standout performer on stages around the globe began as a chorus member in HOT's renowned volunteer chorus.
The "Bad Girl Season" comprising La Traviata, Salome, and Carmen was presented by HOT in 2002. Artist Thomas Woodruff created the sets and attire for Salome. Jun Kaneko, a visual artist, created the sets and costumes for the 2007 Madama Butterfly staging, a joint effort with Opera Omaha.
