Hansel and Gretel Information
Richard Strauss led the 1893 Weimar premiere, and Gustav Mahler led the 1894 Hamburg premiere. The first performance of this work outside of Germany was on November 16, 1894, at Basel, Switzerland. The world premiere took place in London on December 26, 1894, at Daly's Theatre, while the world premiere in the United States took place in New York on October 8, 1895. On April 6, 1907, it premiered at Melbourne's Princess Theatre.
Hansel and Gretel are most frequently staged in English-speaking nations. Constance Bache's translation into English has been the de facto norm for a long time. Norman Kelley translated the opera for the Metropolitan Opera's 1967 staging by Nathaniel Merrill and Robert O'Hearn, and this version was frequently used in the United States. In 1987, David Pountney adapted the opera into English for the English National Opera in a new product that combined dark comedy and serious themes. The Met has been performing Pountney's translation of the opera in a production originally developed for the Welsh National Opera since 2007.
