Guys and Dolls is an American musical with lyrics and music by Frank Loesser. Jo Swerling wrote the book along with Abe Burrows. The storyline is based on “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” from 1993 and “Blood Pressure,” two short stories written by Damon Runyon. The show premiered in 1950 on Broadway, where it ran for approximately 1,200 performances. It also won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Guys and Dolls have had several London and Broadway revivals. Also, it had a 1955 film adaptation, starring Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons, and Marlon Brando.
Guys and Dolls was selected for Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner in 1950. The musical was conceived by producers Ernest Martin and Cy Feuer as an adaptation of Damon Runyon’s short stories. These stories were written in the 1920s and 1930s, concerning gamblers, gangsters, and other underworld characters in New York. Frank Loesser, the musical creator, had spent most of his career as a lyricist for movie musicals. George S. Kaufman was hired as a director for the Guys and Dolls.
Guys and Dolls opened in the United Kingdom at the London Coliseum on May 28, 1953. It was a production of West End and ran for nearly 555 performances. The original Broadway production characters and cast for the Guys and Dolls include Sky Masterson (Robert Alda), Sister Sarah Brown (Isabel Bigley), and Nathan Detroit (Same Levene).
