Ernani Information
Ernani is a four-act operatic dramma lirico written by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto written by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on Victor Hugo's play Hernani, which was first performed in 1830.
Verdi was asked to compose an opera for the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, but finding the perfect subject took some time. During that period, the composer collaborated with the novice Piave to mold one and then another drama by Hugo into an acceptable libretto. According to musicologist Roger Parker's observations, the composer "intervened on some critical matters," such as asking that a tenor sing the role of Ernani (rather than by a contralto as had originally been planned).
Ernani was performed for the first time on March 9, 1844, and due to its "very widespread popularity," it was repeated many times throughout its early years. It became Verdi's most successful opera until it was surpassed in popularity after 1853 by Il Trovatore. It was the first opera ever to be recorded in 1904.
