Drumfolk Information
The history of percussion-based dance and movement styles in Africa and the Americas is told rhythmically in Drumfolk. The play is based on the little-known but monumental event in the history of African Americans, the Stono Rebellion of 1739. After Africans were forbidden to play their drums, the rhythms eventually migrated inside them, creating a new race known as the Drumfolk. As a result, new percussive forms such as ring shout, tap, and stepping emerged as some of the most distinctive performance traditions in the United States.
There will be full-length shows, student matinees, master courses, and workshops as part of Step Afrika's Drumfolk residency at theaters nationwide for at least a week.
