Dance Theatre of Harlem Information
The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is a school and company of professional ballet dancers from the U.S. in Harlem, New York City. After its 1969 inception, Arthur Mitchell served as director, and Karel Shook became a partner. From 1981 to 1992, Milton Rosenstock was the music director for the firm. In April 2010, the California African American Museum in LA hosted the launch of the Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts, a touring exhibition.
After debuting at the New York Public Library, this traveling exhibition—an improved version of the original—toured the U.S. until January 2018. In "Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts," the pioneering history of the organization is relived. The Dance Heritage Coalition helped build and process DTH's archives, which contain many key papers from the company's history.
Some of these items include Salvatore Ferragamo designs, a handwritten score by Karel Shook, and photos of Nelson Mandela's backstage visit during the historic DTH trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. To further strengthen sustainable preservation procedures for the DTH archival collection, the archives were awarded a Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections grant in 2013 by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Since 2022, Robert Garland has served as the creative director. Famous for being the first major ballet company to emphasize Black performers and the first Black classical ballet company, the DTH has made a name for itself in the industry.
