Cristela Alonzo Information
Cristela Alonzo (January 6, 1979) is an American actress, comedian, and producer from San Juan, Texas. She covers blue, physical, observational, and satire comedy. She was raised by a single mother, with the first eight years of her life being troublesome though Alonzo was very close with her. Alonzo learned English from watching TV as her family spoke Spanish only. Alonzo graduated from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School and later attended Webster University to study theater. Unfortunately, she dropped out due to financial reasons.
Alonzo began doing stand-up in 2003 after her mother died in 2002 to process her grief. She was also a part of a small Dallas scene, but later, Alonzo moved to Los Angeles to become a stand-up comedian. She got her first break in Los Angeles in 2006 when she was hired as a writer on a Comedy Central show. In 2010, she was a semi-finalist on the TV show Last Comic Standing. This eventually led her to a segment in the comedy showcase Legally Brown in May 2011.
Alonzo also did a 30-minute segment of The Half Hour by Comedy Central on June 7, 2013. She has been on Conan, Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Showtime, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand Up Revolution, and Live at Gotham. Alonzo created her semi-autobiographical comedy pilot with TV producer Becky Clements called Cristela, created for ABC in 2013. Alonzo starred in some of the hit films such as The Laundromat, Coast, That's Harassment and Hot Pursuit.
