Christopher McBride Information
Christian McBride (May 31, 1972) is an American jazz composer, bassist, and arranger. He is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Juilliard School after switching to double bass from a bass guitar. McBride's music is defined as jazz fusion, jazz, and big band. He has recorded and performed with several jazz musicians and ensembles such as Diana Krall, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, and Joshua Redman. He has also worked with pop, hip-hop, soul, and classical musicians, including Paul McCartney, Celine Dion, Isaac Hayes, The Roots, Renee Fleming, Carly Simon, and Bruce Hornsby.
McBride joined the group of saxophonist Bobby Watson at the age of 17. He played in the bands of older musicians from the age of 17 to 22, such as George Duke, Milt Jackson, J. J. Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, and Hank Jones. McBride was also a member of saxophonist Joshua Redman's Quartet in the early 1990s. Later, in 1995, he began leading his groups.
McBride released his debut album Gettin' to It (Verve) in 1994. The Christian McBride Band was his very own ensemble from 2000 to 2008. The two albums released by this band are Vertical Vision (Warner Bros., 2003) and Live at Tonic (Ropeadope, 2006). Some of the other notable albums by McBride are Number Two Express, The Philadelphia Experiment, Conversations with Christian, Live at the Village Vanguard, and The Movement Revisited. It's Christmas on Mack Avenue (Mack Avenue, 2014) is the only compilation by him.
