Will Menaker, Matt Christman, Felix Biederman, and regular guest host Amber A'Lee Frost launched the Chapo Trap House political podcast in March 2016. Chris Wade and Brendan James serve as producers for the show. The podcast's tone reflects that of the dirtbag left, a subset of the political left that prefers to avoid formal language in favor of slang and expletives.
Years before they started the show, the three hosts met online through Twitter debates. During the 2016 Democratic Party primary between then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then-U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, the show gained widespread attention. Fans of democratic socialist Sanders flocked to the show because of its leftist politics.
An additional member has subsequently joined the podcast's initial trio of hosts. After the 2016 American presidential election, Brendan James became a producer who had previously been on the show as a guest host. Virgil Texas and Amber A'Lee Frost were brought on as rotating co-hosts. In November of 2017, James decided to leave the show and was replaced by Chris Wade, a producer, and writer.
