Bill Gaither Information
William James Gaither (March 28, 1936) is an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Alexandria, Indiana. Gaither was a partner in Paragon Associates, which partnered with Zondervan to acquire Benson Records in the 1980s; now, Benson is a Sony BMG Music Entertainment division. Gaither and businessman Leland Boren established the Chapel Hill Music Group in 1994 in Brentwood, Tennessee; it is now known as the Spring Hill Music Group.
By creating Homecoming records and tours, for instance, Gaither has helped to extend the careers of many who came before him in the Christian music industry, acting as both a father figure and a career booster to many younger musicians. Mark Lowry, Michael W. Smith, Carman, Sandi Patty, and others are some contemporary Christian music (CCM) singers who got their start or gained popularity while touring with the Gaithers.
Beginning in 1991, Gaither's Homecoming tours united prominent figures from the southern gospel and contemporary Christian music scenes, helping to revive both. With stops at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, the tours have sold over 1.1 million tickets worldwide. In 2004, the tour sold more tickets than Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, and Rod Stewart, according to Pollstar.
