Beauty and the Beast Ballet Information
The story was first presented in ballet form 1949 at London's Theatre Ballet. The Chicago Grand Opera Ballet company premiered the ballet adaptation not long after. Several variations on the ballet have been created since then, notably Lew Christensen's 1958 work for the San Francisco Ballet.
Later, in 1982, Christensen made some changes to the ballet, and in 2014, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre also made some adjustments. Like the musical, the ballet is based on a classic tale, and its score is a medley of Tchaikovsky's most famous pieces. Tchaikovsky is well known for his ballet scores Swan Lake (1877) and The Sleeping Beauty (1890), but he didn't write any music for Beauty and the Beast.
The media has been singing the praises of the novel approach to the story. The Northern Ballet's Beauty and the Beast production was reviewed by The Guardian's Luke Jennings, who gave it four stars out of five. The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's performance featured music by Tchaikovsky, particularly the "Orchestra Suite No. 3 in G" and the "Symphony 1, III Scherzo."
