Barber of Seville Information
The Barber of Seville is a two-act opera buffa by Gioachino Rossini, with Cesare Sterbini's Italian libretto. The Barber of Seville, a French farce by Pierre Beaumarchais, inspired the text (1775). Rossini's Barber has been dubbed "the opera buffa of all opera buffe" and has been called "one of the finest masterpieces of humor in music." It is still a popular piece after two centuries.
Rossini was recognized for his prolific output, completing an average of two operas per year for 19 years and composing as many as four in some years. According to musicologists, the music for Il Barbiere di Siviglia was composed in just under three weeks, even though the famous overture was recycled from two earlier Rossini operas, Aureliano in Palmira and Elizabeth, Queen of England, and thus contains no thematic material from Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
The opera was originally presented in Italian in England on March 10, 1818, at the King's Theatre in London, followed by an English version translated by John Fawcett and Daniel Terry on October 13 at the Covent Garden Theatre. It was originally played in America on May 3, 1819, in English at the Park Theatre in New York (possibly the Covent Garden version).
