Anthony Doerr (October 27, 19723) is an American author of short stories and novels. Doerr was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from University School in 1991. He went to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he majored in history and graduated in 1995. Bowling Green State University awarded him an MFA. Doerr's debut book, The Shell Collector, was a collection of short stories (2002). Many of the stories are set in African and New Zealand nations where he has worked and resided. In 2004, he published his first novel, About Grace.
Four Seasons in Rome, his memoir, was released in 2007, and Memory Wall, his second collection of short tales, was published in 2010. All the Light We Cannot See, Doerr's second novel, was published in 2014 and is set in occupied France during WWII, becoming a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction and gaining widespread critical acclaim. The book was a New York Times bestseller and was recognized as a notable book of 2014 by the publication.
The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction was bestowed on it in 2015. It won the 2015 Ohioana Library Association Book Award for Fiction and runner-up for the 2015 Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Doerr contributes to The Morning News, an online magazine, and writes a scientific book column for The Boston Globe.
