American Ballet Theatre Information
The New York City-based American Ballet Theatre (ABT) performs classical ballet. It is widely considered among the top classical ballet companies worldwide, founded in 1939 by Lucia Chase and Richard Pleasant. The company toured the globe until 2019, with a spring season that lasted eight weeks at the Metropolitan Opera House (Lincoln Center) and an autumn season that was shorter at the David H. Koch Theater.
The 2020 season was supposed to start with a five-week spring run at the Metropolitan Opera, followed by a two-week run at the Koch Theater. The US Congress officially named ABT "America's National Ballet Company" in 2006. It is the parent company of the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School.
When McKenzie finally hired a choreographer in January 2009, Alexei Ratmansky was named "Artist in Residence" after a lengthy absence. It was stated in 2021 that McKenzie would be stepping down from the corporation in late 2022. At the end of 2022, Susan Jaffe assumed control of the corporation after being named McKenzie's successor. The ensemble announced Ratmansky's departure in June 2023.
