Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire had its Broadway premiere on December 3, 1947. In the play, Blanche DuBois—a former Southern belle—is dramatized as she moves into a rundown apartment in New Orleans rented by her younger sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley after suffering a string of personal losses.
The most well-known drama Williams wrote in the twentieth century, A Streetcar Named Desire, is also highly regarded. It is one of his most often staged plays and has spawned numerous adaptations, notably a 1951 critically praised film.
Elia Kazan was the director and Irene Mayer Selznick was the producer of the original Broadway production. Starting in early November 1947 at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, it traveled to Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theatre and the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on December 3, 1947.
Anjana Vasan played Stella, Paul Mescal played Stanley, and Patsy Ferran played Blanche in a 2022 revival of the play at London's Almeida Theatre, directed by Rebecca Frecknall. The play's West End transfer was the fastest-selling production to date in any theater run by Ambassador Theatre Group, thanks to the extensive critical acclaim it earned.
