The event began on December 1, 1994, and ended on December 27, 2003, at Madison Square Garden. Mike Ockrent directed the original 1994 production.

On Monday, December 19, 2016, at London's Lyceum Theatre, the musical made its world debut. Robert Lindsay played Ebenezer Scrooge, Alex Gaumond played Bob Cratchit, Carrie Hope Fletcher played Emily, and Madalena Alberto played the Ghost of Christmas Past. A Christmas Carol features a variety of memorable musical songs, including "Jolly, Rich, and Fat," "Nothing To Do With Me," "Christmas Together," and "God Bless Us, Everyone."
Starring Brian Conley as Scrooge, Matt Willis as Bob Cratchit, Jacqueline Jossa as Emily/Ghost of Christmas Future, and Lucie Jones as Ghost of Christmas Past, a new production of the staged concert with the London Musical Theatre Orchestra launched at the Dominion Theatre on December 7, 2020. Originally scheduled to end on January 2, 2021, the run ended on December 15, 2020, owing to Tier 3 limitations imposed by the British government in the city of London.
