Womens Volleyball Nations League Information
Volleyball's international governing organization, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), hosts an annual tournament for senior women's national teams from its member associations called the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League. The inaugural competition ran from May to July 2018, with the finals being held in Nanjing, China. The United States beat Turkey in the final of the first tournament of its kind and took home the trophy.
China was slated to play host to the FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League Finals from 2019 to 2021 back in July of that year. However, the FIVB pushed back the tournament until after the 2020 Summer Olympics because of the COVID-19 pandemic. After much debate, the FIVB decided to forego holding a 2020 tournament and announced that Italy would play home to the 2021 VNL finals.
This event was announced in October 2017 (with the Challenger Cup) as a collaborative effort by the FIVB, the IMG, and 21 national federations. Previously held annually for women between 1993 and 2017, the World Grand Prix has been replaced by the Nations League. The FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League is the equivalent competition for men's national teams.
