Womens College Volleyball Showcase Information
Annually, the NCAA Division I Women's College Volleyball Showcase results in the title of women's volleyball from teams in Division I, which the NCAA has hosted each winter since 1981. Texas prevailed 3–0 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, beating Nebraska. Before the NCAA controlled women's collegiate sports, the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women organized the women's collegiate volleyball championships from 1970 through 1980.
One of twelve women's sports introduced to the NCAA championship program for the 1981–1982 school year was volleyball, as the NCAA battled the AIAW for sole authority over women's collegiate sports. The AIAW carried on its existing championship program in the same twelve (and additional) sports. Still, following a year of dual women's championships, the NCAA won the argument and acquired responsibility for the AIAW's membership.
The inaugural NCAA championship tournament occurred in 1981, with twenty teams vying for the trophy. The competition grew slowly, first with 28 teams in 1982, then 32 in 1986, 48 in 1993, 56 in 1997, and eventually with its present count of 64 in 1998.
