The Winston-Salem Open is an ATP Tour 250 category event hosted by Wake Forest University. It typically takes place in August. The US Open Series includes it. Before the annual US Open in New York City, the US Open Series includes several tournaments. One of the ATP World Tour 250 Tournaments of the Year for 2016 was the Winston-Salem Open.
In the little Long Island town of Jericho, it all started as the Hamlet Challenge Cup. The initial intent was to showcase a four-player solo exhibition featuring elite tennis players. Tennis greats like Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl participated during the preliminary rounds. Beginning in 1990, it was officially included as a stop on the ATP Tour. After moving to New Haven in 2005, the Open combined with a women's event.
The years 2011 and 2012 were championship years for Isner. Ivan Lendl won his fifth solo championship in 1991. Additionally, from 1984 to 1986, he won first place three times in a row. Doubles tennis has been a part of the tournament since 1990. In 2017 and 2018, Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer won back-to-back double titles.
