With 16 total tournament appearances, the Shockers have twice reached the Final Four, four times reached the Elite Eight, and six times reached the Sweet Sixteen. With an average of 10,391 fans per game in 2012, the club ranked 38th nationally at Charles Koch Arena, where it plays its home games.

Both times the Shockers have gone to the Final Four, they have come up short. In 1965, they lost their first Final Four game, 89-108, to UCLA. In 2013, they returned for a second try, but they were defeated by Louisville 68-72. As the 2014–15 Missouri Valley Conference regular season champions, Wichita State won their ninth straight title with a victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers in the season finale.

The Shockers went undefeated during the regular season and won their conference tournament. They were seeded first in the NCAA tournament and fell in the round of 32 to Kentucky, who ended up being the national runner-up. Before joining the American Athletic Conference in the 2017–18 season, the Shockers were members of the Missouri Valley Conference from 1949–50 through 2016–17.
