Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Football Information
The Hilltoppers play in the Football Championship Subdivision, part of the NCAA. They play their home games at L.T. Smooth Stadium in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Though Western Kentucky did field a football squad in 1908, it wasn't until the 1913 season that they began participating in officially sanctioned games. For three years, M.A. Leiper and Roy Manchester were the head coaches of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
For 41 years, Edgar Diddle was the school record holder for most victories and a title winner with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers; he coached them during their first successful season. The Hilltoppers went on to have a string of good seasons after this. After competing alone until 1946, the Hilltoppers finally joined a league. Before their 1948 transition to the Ohio Valley Conference, they were members of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The squad joined Conference U.S. in 2009 following a run in the Sun Belt. The 2002 FCS National Championship was the first for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Since its inception, the football program has produced more than ten conference titles. Western Kentucky University (WKU) defeated Western Michigan, 23-20, in the 2019 SERVPRO First Responders Bowl in Dallas, Texas, on December 30, 2019. WKU announced on December 8, 2019.
