Since 1931, the Western Carolina Catamounts Football team has represented Western Carolina University on the football field, competing in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. They have won almost 300 games since then, having participated in several FCS Playoffs and the FCS National Championship Game. Bob Water led the squad through one of its most beloved years, from 1969 until 1988.
Water set records for most victories, the longest head coaching tenure, and the best winning percentage among all former Western Carolina coaches within this time frame. Of all the years he led, none exactly jumped out like the 1983 season. The regular season 8-2-1 performance of the 1983 Western Carolina Catamounts qualified them for the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
The Catamounts faced the likes of Colgate, Holy Cross, and Southern Conference opponent Furman with several legendary victories in the tournament, which was shocking. Eventually falling to top-ranked Southern Illinois, WCU would still hold their heads high, knowing they had done more than any previous Catamounts club before them, to the Division I-AA National Championship Game.
