The 2022-23 season for the Mountaineer began with the return of the Backyard Brawl. The Mountaineers played the Panthers in a game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. They lost by a score of 38–31. Kansas defeated the Mountaineers, 55–42, in overtime at Morgantown the next week. WVU got back on track by defeating Towson (65-7) and then defending the Black Diamond trophy with a 33-10 victory over Virginia Tech the following week.
West Virginia's first Big 12 Conference match was a loss against Texas by 20-38. The Mountaineers' first game back in the revived Brawl was a loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers by a score of 38-31. West Virginia defeated Virginia on Saturday, September 16, 2023, in the most recent installment of the Brawl, 17-6.
