The Wells Fargo Championship is an American professional golf tournament played in North Carolina on the PGA Tour. The tournament was established in 2003. It takes place every year in May at the Quail Hollow Club, which is located in Charlotte. The tournament has attracted many top players who were included on tour. The tournament was started as the Wachovia Championship. The Wells Fargo Championship is organized by Champions for Education, Inc. The tournament was held in Wilmington at Eagle Point Golf Club in 2017 as Quail Hollow.
The Wells Fargo Championship is currently sponsored by Wells Fargo, which purchased Wachovia in 2008. The name of the tournament was changed to Wells Fargo in 2009 for marketing purposes. Since the event had no remaining collaborations with Wachovia, the new sponsors wanted to remove its name. The tournament had received Federal funding under the Troubled Assets Relief Program. On April 30, 2019, the announcement was made that Wells Fargo will continue sponsoring the tournament until 2024. The tournament has been hosted at Quail Hollow Club from 2003-2016 and 2019-2019.
Notable winners for the Wells Fargo Championship include Jason Day, Brian Harman, James Hahn, J. B Holmes, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, and Rory Mcllroy.
