Volleyball Nations League Information
Women's senior national teams from countries affiliated with the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the sport's international governing body, compete in the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League. The inaugural competition ran from May to July 2018, with the finals in Nanjing, China. The United States defeated Turkey in the championship game in the first tournament ever held.
The FIVB originally planned for China to host the 2019–21 women's volleyball Nations League finals. Still, on March 13, 2020, they opted to delay the tournament until after the 2020 Summer Olympics because of the ongoing pandemic. The FIVB has officially scrapped the 2020 tournament and announced that Italy would host the 2021 VNL finals.
The development of the competition was announced in October 2017 (together with the introduction of the Challenger Cup) as a cooperative endeavor between the FIVB, the IMG, and 21 national federations. Formerly held annually for women between 1993 and 2017, the World Grand Prix was superseded by the Nations League. There is also the FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League for male national teams.
