USA Wrestling Information
The U.S. Wrestling Association and the U.S. Wrestling Federation used to be part of USA Wrestling. It is now the group that runs freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling in the U.S. In addition to being the national governing organization of the sport at the competitive level, USA Wrestling is the official representation of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the United World Wrestling (UWW).
After the Civil War, amateur wrestling—particularly freestyle—became a popular sport, and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) was the first to step in and establish rules for the sport, funding national tournaments and local athletic clubs. However, there were some noticeable differences between freestyle and collegiate wrestling, especially in secondary schools and colleges.
At Stillwater, Oklahoma, on September 11, 1976, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum was founded. As the USWF battled through the courts to become the national sport-regulating organization, this was a huge step in the right direction. The USOC (now USOPC) and other national regulating organizations were defined by the Amateur Sports Act of 1978.
The probationary period for USA Wrestling as a voting member of the FILA Congress ended in 1986. The membership became active on April 25, 1984. The original plan was to keep the Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Still, in 1987, the board of directors decided to relocate it to Colorado Springs, Colorado, which was already home to the U.S. Olympic Committee.
