The USA Basketball Men’s National Team is the American team in international competitions. It has won medals in every one of the nineteen Olympic tournaments it has competed in, including sixteen golds. The squad won Olympic gold medals in the professional period in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. In the current FIBA World Rankings, the team is placed #1. In the early decades, the United States dominated international basketball, capturing a record seven consecutive Olympic gold medals.
The United States was usually represented by military, industrial, or collegiate players before the emergence of NBA players. Meanwhile, European and South American countries were permitted to use their finest players. The United States sent AAU teams Denver Chevrolets (in 1950) and Peoria Caterpillars (in 1954); in 1959, an Air Force squad was sent; and in 1963 and 1967, the team was made up of AAU, armed forces, and college ranks.
Until 1992, just a few players had the chance to compete in numerous Olympic Games. Unlike their European rivals who had competed in multiple Olympics, American players usually only competed in one and then turned pro after winning a medal. For the first time, the United States team was represented by NBA players in 1992.
