Along with the Chevron Championship, Women's PGA Championship, Women's Open Championship, and The Evian Championship, the United States Women's Open is the oldest of the five major championships played on the LPGA Tour. The USGA hosts fifteen national tournaments.
The United States Women's Open has been going strong since its inception 77 years ago in 1946, making it the sole event officially recognized as a major by the LPGA since its inception in 1950. Before its 1953 transformation as a USGA event, the WPGA ran it for the first three years and the LPGA for the subsequent four. The event has typically taken place the week following Memorial Day since 2018.
Regarding women's golf, the biggest money is awarded at the U.S. Women's Open, the second major tournament of the LPGA season. The purse nearly doubled from $5.5 million (2019–2021) to $10 million (beginning in 2022) due to the most recent increase, announced in January 2022. With the announcement of charity healthcare business ProMedica as the tournament's presenting sponsor, the purse was increased for 2022.
