US Mens Clay Court Championships Information
The U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships is an ATP Tour tennis event annually. Since its inception in 1910, it has been hosted in about 20 locations, with Houston, Texas, as the site since 2001. The prize pool is currently $474,000, with the victor taking home $85,900. It is unique among U.S. tournaments played on clay courts that are part of the ATP World Tour.
In 1910, the Western Lawn Tennis Association convinced the USLTA that a National Clay Court Championship would encourage the West to build additional clay courts. The Western Lawn Tennis Association was a division of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association, today known as the USTA/Midwest.
The reduced installation and maintenance costs of clay courts compared to grass courts were expected to hasten the game's rising popularity. At the Omaha Field Club, the inaugural National Clay Court Championships were staged, with the finals witnessed by 5,000 spectators.
The Houston Westside Tennis Club hosted the event from 2001 until 2007. After a few years on the same red clay as the French Open, the tournament moved to Har-Tru green clay in 2007.
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Atlanta, Georgia, were among the cities that submitted proposals to the U.S. Tennis Association in 2007 for a new site. However, the U.S. Tennis Association revealed in May 2007 that the event would only relocate to the River Oaks Country Club in the area of River Oaks downtown.
