Troy Trojans Football Information
The Trojans are Troy University's football team in Alabama. Although they are Division I, they have played under the Football Championship Subdivision since 2001. Though the institution has formally had a football team since 1909, the turbulent circumstances of the early 20th century meant that the squad had to be constantly dismantled and rebuilt.
The present program started in 1946, and the Trojans have competed regularly in college football ever since. Under head coach Billy Atkins, the squad discovered its first major success in the late 1960s. Atkins guided the squad all the way to the NAIA championships and received the Coach of the Year Award for 1968. He is still among the most effective coaches in the program.
Troy's Trojans have had a good record for most of their seasons; some of the finest scores come from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their best season occurred in 1983 when they had an unheard-of 12:1 win/loss ratio. The Trojans first won their division title in 1988; they are multi-time conference winners.
