Tigres del Licey Information
The Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) is home to the baseball team Tigres del Licey. The franchise has called Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic home, since its inception in 1907. Estadio Quisqueya is the home field for the national capital's LIDOM teams, the other being Leones del Escogido. Having played in LIDOM the longest, Tigres have amassed 23 LIDOM championships and 12 Caribbean Series championships.
On November 7, 1907, a group of people gathered at the home of Vicente Mara and Jacinto "Pichán" Vallejo on el Conde Street in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone to form what would later become the Licey squad. The original roster included many of the team's original players. Due to Licey's overwhelming dominance over the next 16 years, the other three teams came to terms and agreed to merge their top players into a single squad.
Licey holds the record for most victories in the Caribbean Series with 11. In an unprecedented turn of events during the 2008 season, Licey qualified for the series despite finishing second in the Dominican championship as a Puerto Rican team dropped out owing to financial concerns. Licey triumphed against their Dominican rivals, Aguilas Cibaeas, and teams from Mexico and Venezuela to take the series.
