Their uniform color theme includes black and scarlet. The Masked Rider and Raider Red are the official mascots for the Red Raiders. Kirby Hocutt is the team's current athletic director, whereas Joey McGuire serves as the head coach.
Houston and Texas Tech University have been longtime rivals, dating back to their days as members of the now-defunct Southwest Conference (when they played annually from 1976 to 1995). Sixteen of the first 34 meetings between the two teams were decided by single digits, and the 1987 game ended in a draw, so it's safe to say that these contests have always been close. The rematch occurred in NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on September 4, 2021, for the Texas Kickoff Game.
A brawl broke out amongst some of the spectators after the game ended. The TaxAct Texas Bowl in 2022 was the most recent bowl game won by Texas Tech. On December 28, 2022, the Red Raiders won 42-25 over the Ole Miss Rebels, coached by former No. 9 Lane Kiffin.
