The game takes place between the Sun Belt’s regular-season divisional champions from the West and East divisions. The first contest of the game took place in 2018 and is typically played on the first Saturday of December, with ESPN being the official TV partner.
It was established that the game would not be counted against NCAA limits on regular-season contests. The rule was implemented in 1992 when the Southeastern Conference launched its title game, which had South Carolina and Arkansas the previous year.
The conference announced in 2017 that the two-division teams would compete with the division winners who would qualify for the championship game. Another rule of the game; if no teams are ranked in the CFP selection committee, the home field will be determined to use a formula based on six computer ratings. The formula was originally used in the old Bowl Championship Series standings.
