Stanford Cardinal Football Information
The Stanford Cardinals play college football at the Division I FBS level for Stanford University. The team is a part of the Pac-12 Conference's North Division. Before the 1982 season, the team officially changed to the Cardinals. Until 1930, Stanford players competed under the "Cardinal" moniker. Although throughout the first two decades of the school's sports history, the "Cardinals" moniker was more prevalent.
They were known as the "Indians" from 1930 to 1972 and then as the "Cardinals" from 1972 until 1981. Officials did not go along with a student-led effort to rename the team's name to the "Robber Barons" in December 1975.
David Shaw, the team's offensive coordinator, was promoted to head coach after Jim Harbaugh departed for the San Francisco 49ers. Shaw took his team to three straight BCS bowl games. The driving forces were Andrew Luck, the team's quarterback, and the defense. Kevin Hogan took over as quarterback when Andrew Luck went to the NFL Draft.
After a rebuilding year in 2014, Shaw, Hogan, and Heisman runner-up Christian McCaffrey led Stanford to their third consecutive Pac-12 title and Rose Bowl appearance in 2015.
In 2017, Shaw guided Stanford to another Pac-12 title game, losing to rival USC despite having Heisman runner-up Bryce Love on his team. Shaw resigned as head coach of the Stanford Cardinal on November 27, 2022, about an hour after the conclusion of the Cardinal's 2022 season, after the team finished with a 3-9 record for the second year.
