The men's basketball tournament of the Southland Conference was instituted in 1981. The tournament champion received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. When the event was in its early stages (1981–2001), the higher seed hosted the first round, while the latter rounds were held at a predetermined venue. 

In 2002, Southland changed the format so that every round of the tournament would be played at the campus of each higher seed. This was again amended when the conference first chose a neutral site for the tournament in 2007. 

Reportedly, as part of an agreement that kept McNeese in the Southland after Conference USA courted it and nearly joined the Western Athletic Conference, the event began taking place at The Legacy Center on the campus of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, beginning with the 2023 edition. After fifteen seasons at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, a Houston suburb, from 2008 to 2022, the show moved.
