Southern Jaguars Football Information
The Southern University football team is nicknamed the Jaguars. The SWAC is the Southwestern Athletic Conference, where the Jaguars compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. In 1916, college football was introduced to the Jaguars, who first competed in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference before moving to the SWAC in 1934.
They meet Grambling in the final game of the regular season every year in late November in the Bayou Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana. Additionally, each year, Jackson State and Southern meet in a game known as the "Boombox Classic," which is considered a rivalry game between the two schools. All 19 of Southern's conference titles (12 outright and seven shared) have come from the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
