The Southern 500 is a NASCAR Cup Series stock car race, officially known as the Cook Out Southern 500. It takes place at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina. The first race of the series took place in 1950. Some of the race’s former names are Heinz Southern 500, Mountain Dew Southern 500, Pepsi Southern 500, Dodge Charger 500, Dodge Avenger 500, Dodge Challenger 500, and Southern 500 presented by GoDaddy.com.
The distance of the Southern 500 is 501 miles and consists of 367 laps. This race has typically been held on Labor Day since 2015, and it is largely considered one of the special Crown Jewels of the NASCAR calendar. The race has been nicknamed the “oldest superspeedway race” of NASCAR. It is declared one of the more difficult and challenging races on the NASCAR schedule by competitors and media for many decades. This is because of the track’s rough pavement and unusual, asymmetrical egg-shape, which is generally an unforgiving nature. Thus far, most wins as a driver were scored by Jeff Gordon (6) and as a team, by Hendrick Motorsports (11).
