South Carolina State Bulldogs Football Information
South Carolina State University is represented in college football by the South Carolina State Bulldogs. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) Bulldogs compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Bulldogs have a storied football program and have won most MEAC championships. Harry Carson, Deacon Jones, Marion Motley, and Donnie Shell are four players from the university who are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Robert Porcher, Shaquille Leonard, Charlie Brown, and Orlando Brown Sr. are a few more renowned Bulldog athletes. When legendary former SC State Coach Willie Jeffries was hired to lead the Wichita State football program in 1979, he became the first African American Head Coach of a largely white Division I-A football program. The College Football Hall of Fame inducts Jeffries.
The Bulldogs have a 2-6 record and have made six appearances in the I-AA/FCS playoffs. The Bulldogs have participated with a 7-7 record in 14 bowl games. The North Carolina A&T Aggies, Florida A&M Rattlers, and Bethune-Cookman Wildcats are fierce rivals of SC State. Joe Thomas, Sr., the father of Green Bay Packers linebacker Joe Thomas, set a record for the oldest participant in an NCAA Division I game on November 19, 2016. Thomas Sr., a 55-year-old running back, had one carry for three yards against Savannah State.
