South Alabama Jaguars Football Information
The University of South Alabama is represented in the FBS of the NCAA by the South Alabama Jaguars football team, founded in 2009. In 2012, the University of South Alabama joined the FBS and the Sun Belt Conference (SBC). Football was officially added to the university's intercollegiate athletics program on December 6, 2007.
Ladd-Peebles Stadium has been home to the South Alabama Jaguars football program since its establishment in 2009. The Ladd-Peebles Auditorium has played a significant role in Mobile's past. On October 2, 1948, the stadium opened to the public for the first time with a college football game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Vanderbilt Commodores. The stadium also has a place in Alabama Crimson Tide football mythology because it was the location of Bear Bryant's first game as head coach.
Former South Alabama defensive coordinator and current Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack was promoted to head coach of the Jaguars on December 12, 2020. Wommack's first season with the Jaguars saw an overall record of 5-7 and a conference record of 2-6. Wommack took the team to its first bowl game since the Joey Jones era and a 10-2 record in his second season at the helm.
