SMU Mustangs Mens Basketball Information
Southern Methodist University (SMU) in University Park, Texas, is the home of the SMU Mustangs men's basketball team, which plays NCAA Division I college basketball in the American Athletic Conference. Rob Lanier is the Mustangs' current coach. SMU's record in 104 years of basketball is 1,377–1,237.
SMU has produced 11 All-Americans, 23 NBA Draft picks, one Final Four appearance, twelve NCAA Tournament appearances, sixteen conference championships, and eleven All-Americans.
The rebirth of SMU basketball happened in 2012 when Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown took over the Mustangs, and Moody Coliseum underwent a $48 million restoration. SMU earned its first conference title in 22 years (regular season and tournament champions) and returned to the NCAA tournament in his third season (2014–15), captained by Nic Moore. However, the team lost a contentious match against UCLA on a goaltending call.
Despite being prohibited from participating in the postseason due to NCAA infractions, SMU began the season with an improbable 18–0 record, peaked at #8 in the AP Poll, and concluded the season with a 25–5 record.
The Mustangs were stunned by 11th-seeded USC by one point in the first round of the NCAA tournament after winning the regular season and conference tournament crowns in the 2016–17 American Athletic Conference. They were also awarded a 6th seed in the tournament.
