The Southern Methodist University Mustangs football team, based in Dallas, Texas, represents Southern Methodist University in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) competition in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The program's history is rich in great heights and low points, dating back to 1915, the year it became part of collegiate football.
The Mustangs began the 2021 season on a strong foot under Sonny Dykes, who helped steer them to an explosive offense that ranked among the best in the AAC. Finally, dynamic passing attacks and scoring drives gave the team a fighting shot to be in contention for its conference. But after a promising beginning, the season ended with some disappointments, particularly close losses in important games.
Following a 2021 season in which Lashlee led the Bearcats to just two bowl appearances and no conference championships, 2022 was a year of leadership change as Lashlee served as just the second SMU head coach since Collis 'Shumpy' Schembechler from 1946–49. Having recharged, the Mustangs hoped to improve on the offensive output of the past couple of years while also ramping up their defensive prowess under Lashlee.
The team aspires to compete in ÁACare and win the conference championship and a spot in a bowl game. Even after the Mustangs kept recruiting and building talent, never straying from their customary speedy and agile roster style, the future looked bright for college football.
