Seton Hall Pirates Mens Basketball Information
The Seton Hall Pirates men's basketball team is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's basketball team of Seton Hall University in South Orange. The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, is the home field for this Big East Conference squad.
The inaugural basketball season at Seton Hall was in 1903–04, but the institution didn't field a squad again until 1908–09, the year they won their first game. The Pirates became the school's official mascot in 1931, and once John "Honey" Russell joined the squad in 1936, they quickly rose to national fame.
The Pirates have made 14 appearances in the NCAA tournament. Together, they have a record of 16-14. With 18 appearances, the Pirates have made it to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Together, they have a record of 8-19. The 1953 season saw them win the NIT.
In 2015–16, after Willard's Pirates had failed to improve upon a .500 record in his first five years at the helm, they finally broke through, defeating Villanova Wildcats, who won the national title, in the Big East tournament championship.
As part of the Big East-Big10 Gavitt Games in November 2021, Seton Hall faced up against the Michigan Wolverines, ranked No.4 at the time, at Ann Arbor, Michigan. When Seton Hall defeated Michigan in the 2021 edition, it was the first road victory for the school against a non-conference AP top-five squad.
